History of Peru
Set in the Andes mountains, Peru was the home of many ancient civilizations. The most prominent of these is the Incas, conquered in 1533 by Spain. Peru gained its independence in 1821, completely separating itself from the Spanish presence in 1824.
After many years of political unrest and sporadic guerrilla activity, alternating frequently between democratic and authoritarian rule, Peru has gained a period of reasonable political stability through its current president Alejandro Toledo.
Economy in Peru
Despite what some might consider to be a less-than-ideal government, Peru's economy is in surprisingly good shape. Efforts are being made to keep it a pro-market, and strength has been shown in maintaining a tight fiscal policy while keeping inflation down. The economy of Peru is mainly powered by mining and exports, which has allowed it to keep an average growth of 4% over recent years.
