NEW CANADIAN TRAVEL VISA REQUIREMENT EXPECTED TO BRING CHANGES TO STUDENT RECRUITMENT IN MEXICO
On Tuesday, July 14, Canada announced that it will now require visas from Mexican and Czech passport holders.
Citing an increasing number of what are deemed bogus refugee claims, the Canadian government hopes this move will relieve significant delays now experienced in their refugee program. Mexico is currently the number one source country for refugee claims in Canada.
For the first 48 hours after the travel visa requirement went into effect, Mexican and Czech nationals could apply upon arrival. However, from Thursday on a visa will be required. As to be expected, long lines and backlogs have already started in US consulates abroad as those with existing travel plans scramble to apply in time.
With visa waiver no longer being an important selling point, this change will undoubtedly have an effect on student recruitment from these countries as prospective students may choose to take their studies (and dollars) elsewhere.
